There are all sorts of political leaders, both good and bad. Whenever we see the politicians who profess to work for the public interest but who undeniably do what serves themselves first, we can not help but be disappointed. God expects us to put our political views to one side, and to pray for those in our government as we would for people who are just like us; people with families, with hurts and pains, with triumphs and joys. He wants us to remember that the ultimate government is His and that no matter what happens on this earth, He is the one in charge, seated on the ultimate Judgement Seat in all eternal glory.
1 Timothy 2:1-3 ESV First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
A prayer for our government
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for this country I live in and that I have the privilege to pray for the local government here.
Father, I proclaim Your sovereign hand upon this place and all its people, and I ask for Your protection and blessing over those who govern and rule over us. I will remember that everything they do has been determined by You first and foremost.
Proverbs 21:1 ESV The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.
Loving God, You are the King above all kings and You are the ultimate Judge.
Romans 13:1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Even though I don’t always agree with everything that goes on in this country, please endow those who work in positions of governing authority with good health, wisdom, patience and perseverance.
Daniel 2:21 ESV He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;
These are people whom You love too, so I will commit to pray for and honour them. I will pray to bless them, not curse them. May all other believers in this country also honour those in government and commit to pray for them, as this is pleasing in God’s sight.
1 Peter 2:13-17 ESV Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
Please have mercy on those in government who do evil and provide them with opportunities to hear the gospel and turn from their own ways to Yours.
May the citizens of this country obey the law and honour those in government who serve them because this is pleasing to You. Strengthen us with the ability to empathise with each other and to love others above ourselves.
Philippians 2:3 ESV Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
I ask You to please also fill the government with believers who will humbly seek Your truth and demonstrate godly values in the midst of differing views and politicking. Please protect them and grant them the favour they need to implement policies that are good for the people of this country. May they be as innocent as doves and as shrewd as snakes!
Matthew 10:16 (ESV) “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
We will wait patiently for the day You establish Your perfect Kingdom on earth, not one ruled by human beings, but Jesus Christ Himself. Thank you Lord, that Jesus is the perfect Ruler and King for us all.
Daniel 2:44 ESV And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever,
In Jesus’ name, amen!”
